My name is Sebastien Boncy. I am a photographer, mercenary educator, and writer.
I am connected to Houston by accident. I came here to study as a university student because I had an uncle here. That was the main reason I ended up here rather than anywhere else. And also, because like a lot of young men with no imagination, I couldn't really visualize a future in my home country of Haiti. So I end up in Houston with no sort of preconceived notions of the place. And slowly, the place worked his charms on me and convinces me. And eventually, I am in Houston, no longer by accident but I am in Houston because I am choosing Houston. It came at something of a surprise about two years in, but, you know, I've been living here since the late '90s and I love it.
This archive, Purple Time Space Swamp, is thousands of pictures of Houston taken over the last decade, and so growing with no real end in sight. It's an attempt to take all these little pieces of a city that you would know as somebody who lives here but are so difficult to describe. It's an attempt at taking the ineffable nature of a shared living space and turning it into a bunch of pictures.
Purple Time Space Swamp is inspired by the lack of purple time space swamp. There were all these pictures that I wanted to see but could not find. So if they did exist, they were beyond my reach. And so now I am going out into the city and taking them, and then adding them to this archive that I try to make as available as possible. And really the lack drives the project. It's like, what are the gaps? What is still missing? And the more I venture out into the city, the more I get to know the city, sort of like, it seems like the gaps are multiplying. And so the project continues to grow. You know, maybe one day, I will run out of gaps, or maybe I will run out of the necessary talent or drive to capture them, or maybe I'll start repeating myself way too much. At that point, I will know that Purple Time Space Swamp is over.
Sebastien Boncy, born in Haiti and shipwrecked in Texas, is all six members of the Pugilist Press collective. In the last decade, he's maintained a hyperlocal practice centered around an online photographic archive of the city, Purple Time Space Swamp. Sebastien is currently doing the adjunct shuffle in the City of Syrup. He takes pictures daily, distributes them freely, does it for the culture.

Estoy conectado a Houston por accidente. Vine aquí para estudiar la universidad porque tenía un tío aquí. Esa fue la razón por la que terminé aquí más bien que en otro lugar. Y también porque, como muchos jóvenes sin imaginación no podía visualizar en un futuro en mi país natal de Haití. Por eso terminé en Houston, sin ninguna noción sobre el lugar. Este archivo, "Espacio pantanoso de tiempo púrpura", consiste de miles de fotos de Houston tomadas durante la ultima decada y ha ido creciendo sin tener un objetivo final en mente. Es solo la idea de tomar muchas pequeñas parte de la ciudad que todos conocen si viven aquí pero que son difíciles de describir. Es un llamado a abrazar una naturaleza inefable de un espacio de vida compartido, a fin de convertirlo en un montón de imágenes. "Espacio Pantanoso de Tiempo Púrpura" se inspira en la falta de espacio pantanoso de tiempo púrpura, donde había tantas fotos que quería ver pero que no podía encontrar. Y si existían, estaban fuera de mi alcance. Por eso ahora saldré a la ciudad y las capturaré para agregarlas a este archivo, el cual intento hacer lo más disponible para todos. La carencia es lo que realmente impulsa al proyecto. Son las brechas que existen y lo que aún falta. Y es que cuanto más me adentro en la ciudad, cuanto más la conozco, parece que las brechas se amplían y multiplican. Y, pues, el proyecto sigue creciendo. Seguramente algún día se agotarán las brechas o podría quedarme sin el talento o el impulso necesarios para capturarlas. O tal vez empiece a repetirme demasiado. Llegado ese punto sabré que el "Espacio pantanoso de tiempo púrpura" se acabó.
